Looking up to YOU

When it comes to having mentors or looking up to certain people to learn from them, the closer we get to them, the more we learn about them, as we see their strengths and flaws from a closer proximity.

Let’s learn together how to derive the benefit of mentorship using what I will call the ๐˜๐Ž๐” Principle:

๐˜earn to always learn – Those who have gone before us can teach us alot if we have hearts that are open to learn. Even someone younger than us, who is an expert in an area in which we are a beginner, can still be a valuable source of lessons. Therefore, let’s not be blinded by age, but rather focus on the ‘age of their experience’ in the area of their expertise.

๐Žbservant sifting of information – Like two sides of a coin, mentors have the good and not-so- good. Remain observant and do not blindly absorb all the information being given to you. Practice observant sifting of information. During the time of mentorship, regular prayerful reflection and introspection is key to check yourself and see that you are not subconciously learning the not-so- good aspects.

๐”nlearn and relearn – Information that works in one season may not be the information needed in another season of your life. It doesn’t mean the mentor was wrong, rather that you need the wisdom of God to know which advice applies to which season. I will give an example to elaborate further. In primary school, we learn Social Studies, Mathematics etc. If you give Social Studies answers in a Mathematics quiz, the answers will be wrong. The Social Studies answers are correct only in a Social Studies quiz. It kind of works like that with advice too.
