A new job fills people with optimism and great expectations of a wonderful career experience ahead. It can be incredibly exhiliarating and much like a new relationship ๐. And just like a new relationship, it goes through its phases. HOW, you may ask? Here is the ๐๐๐:
๐๐จ๐ง๐๐ฒ๐ฆ๐จ๐จ๐ง phase. This is when birds are chirping, everything is rosy and nothing could be better. You may even wonder why it took you so long to accept the job offer because the feeling is just sublime. You tell everybody who will listen about how awesome your workmates are, the office space, the aircon, and even the sound of the doors opening and closing are a sweet symphony ๐. I know I am being extra but you know what I mean! Sound familiar?
๐๐๐ฏ๐ข๐จ๐ฎ๐ฌ phase. At this point, it becomes ๐จ๐๐ฏ๐ข๐จ๐ฎ๐ฌ to you that every company has its own policies,
politics, culture and perculiar situations. The ‘new employee’ energy is dissipated and it is
๐จ๐๐ฏ๐ข๐จ๐ฎ๐ฌ that people, systems, clients etc are not perfect. During this phase, it is advisable to be careful about what you say about the company because you will most likely only express the
negative aspects that are irking you. Think before you speak and give yourself some time to settle into the company.
๐๐จ๐ซ๐ค phase. I like how calm this phase is because your emotions have settled and you now have to put in the ๐ฐ๐จ๐ซ๐ค to have healthy relationships with colleagues, to deliver on your work goals and to stay energised when business is slow. Put in the ๐ฐ๐จ๐ซ๐ค! This is the phase where the praises you sing about your company are the most realistic. You have been there, seen it, worked through it
and you say, “This is still a good place to be and we deliver quality.” This phase requires intentionality, continous improvment and effort for the love or working relationship to continue to thrive.
