The ‘price’ of sustained career success often involves various sacrifices and investments. These may differ from person to person, depending on circumstances and career aspirations. Below are some general ones. As you read through, I challenge you to ask yourself, โAm I willing to pay this
price (or to continue paying this price)?
๐. ๐๐ข๐ฆ๐ ๐๐จ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ข๐ญ๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ญ โ long hours and investing personal time are part of the sacrifices. We are in a generation that speaks highly of working smart. But working smart can only happen after you learn how to work hard. You must understand how a process works in order to improve it. And hard work is tiresome and requires time, commitment and consistency.
๐. ๐๐จ๐ง๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐ฎ๐จ๐ฎ๐ฌ ๐๐๐๐ซ๐ง๐ข๐ง๐ โ investing in higher education, certifications, or specialised training is not easy when you are in full-time employment because you have to split your time between work,
school and other demanding personal commitments. I once sat on an interview panel where my supervisor at the time looked at a candidates CV and was not pleased that the candidate had not attained any academic or professional qualifications in a very long time. Despite them having the minimum requirements, but their lack of continuous learning disadvantaged them. That was a light- bulb moment for me! Stay abreast with industry trends and develop new skills.
๐. ๐๐ญ๐ซ๐๐ฌ๐ฌ ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐๐๐ฅ๐ญ๐ก โ Ill-health can prevent you from having sustained career success. As far as it
depends on what you can control, take care of yourself by investing in your health (spiritual, mental, physical). You can not let your health run on autopilot while you pursue career success. This is a big investment you must be willing to pay the price for.
