In Part 1 which you can find hereย of this 2-part series, we covered 3 investments you must make to attain and sustain career success. We will cover the final 4 here.
Career Success comes with some personal sacrifices and a call for wisdom in managing work and life. Sometimes, you need to spend an evening with family and then get back to work for an hour or two after they have gone to bed in order to catch up on pending work because there will be days when your 8am to 5pm won’t be enough to cover the commitments of that day. Do not neglect family-time because of work. Balancing career ambitions with family life and personal interests can be challenging. But you must pay the price to thrive in both.
Education and professional development programmes are expensive. Do not be among those who only attend professional conferences that are paid for by the company you work for. Invest in yourself and pay for yourself at times.
Perseverance in the face of setbacks, rejections and failures is a must. The person whose career achievements you admire did not get there because it was easy; they got there DESPITE the hardships. Invest in emotional resilience. Leadership calls for it.
The ethical dilemmas faced at lower levels of a company hierarchy differ greatly from those of individuals in higher offices. Navigating ethical dilemmas and maintaining integrity in your career choices is a price to be paid for sustained career success. At times, being ethical may cost you some ‘opportunities’, nonetheless building and preserving a positive professional reputation is important for Pursue long-term success and not short-term gains obtained by compromising your ethics.
